Historical Details

Streamlined's Ad9

In the early 1930's, the Dutch Railways were looking for their own set of international coaches. Two different designs were ordered; one based on the Pullman coaches used in trains towards the south, the other based on the German Rheingold coaches.

The latter design, named Ad9, was delivered in NS green with dark grey roof and sideskirts, with shiny metal text on the coach bodies. The coaches proved to be inferior to the Pullman design and were swiftly demoted to services in the Netherlands, with only occasional trips across the border. With their demotion to national services, the sideskirts were removed as their visual appeal was preferred on international luxury trains and made maintenance much more difficult.

With the coaches being fictional, no real life examples exist.

Rheinghold coaches

The Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesselschaft (DR), or German National Railway, would take inspiration from the success of the Pullman and CIWL coaches and dining cars, designing their very own in the form of the Rheingold coaches, with the first examples being built between the years 1928 and 1929.

The coaches themselves were advertised as particularly comfortable saloon cars, with a heavy riveted all-steel construction, with associated baggage cars also being purchased. They were manufactured by various carriage and wagon factories, namely Linke-Hofmann-Busch, Wegmann & Co. and Westwaggon, with others being ordered from Créde in Kassel being procured by the Orenstein & Koppel.

The coaches stood out from the majority of German rolling stock, with their radiant violet-beige livery, along with Reichsbahn eagles and number plates in gunmetal, with raised polished lettering and numbers. They were additionally given the lettering "Rheingold" on the sides, below the window parapet.
