Historical Detail

SS
The Maatschappij tot Exploitatie tot de Staatsspoorwegen (SS) ordered 339 of these throughout 1863-1889 from the factory J. J. Beijnes, among others. The coach had no toilet onboard and was split up into five compartments that could fit ten people each, one of these compartments was reserved for women only. They entered service as third class (C) coaches SS 1-339
NS
After the SS and the Hollandsche IJzeren Spoorweg-maatschappij (HSM) merged in 1921, the remaining coaches were renumbered to NS C 2126-2285, remaining as third class coaches. While most were scrapped between 1931-1933, SS C 218 survived until 1952 as a track maintenance wagon, numbered NS 177007. Following 1952 it was preserved, with the coach being restored in 1975 in its original SS livery and number and brought the Dutch National Railway Museum in Utrecht.
