Historical Detail

In 1930-1931 the NS ordered 70 new coaches from the factories J. J. Beijnes, Werkspoor and HAWA which were made of metal with each different factory having minor differences from one another. These coaches were to become the NS C 6401-6470 class. A further 15 were ordered in 1933 which were welded, unlike the usual rivet construction.

The coaches are split up into two different halves, being divided by two toilets in the middle. On each side there were 6 compartment, and the compartments were connected with a corridor in the middle of the coach. Even though they never got gangways, plans were made to fit them in 1939, so a handful of coaches got doors at the end walls. The gangways, however, never became a reality due to the high costs associated with it.

During World War 2 multiple coaches dissapeared to Eastern-Europe and while a part returned after the war, others remained in Poland and the DDR. In total 16 C12c coaches were reported missing in 1949. After World War 2 the remaining coaches got renumbered and promoted to second class coaches, now becoming the NS B 6401-6453 and NS B 6470-80 class coaches.

From 1962 to 1966 the remaining coaches were slowly being withdrawn and scrapped. The NS B 6478 managed to survive until 1991 being part of a childrens playground when it was "bought off" for ƒ 1,00 and restored the coach to its original dark green livery. It currently resides at the SGB.
