Liveries

SS 13 is only available in SS dark green.

Historical details

The Maatschappij tot Exploitatie van de Staatsspoorwegen (SS) put the first of what would be a succesful series of 74 locomotives into service in 1865. The series would be contineously built up to 1872, albeit with various technical upgrades. SS 13 was built in 1865, making it the oldest surviving steam locomotive in the Netherlands and in Streamlined.

The series was the first of the SS to have a protective plate above the cab. The two windows in it granted them the nickname "De bril" (the glasses).

After the arrival of the larger SS 300 series, these machines were put mostly on secondary work, but the increase of train traffic in those years ensured the locomotives still had plenty to do. Their usage remained stable up to the First World War, after which they were slowly reduced to shunting, which they excelled at due to their small driving wheel diameter.

When the SS merged with the HSM in 1921, all 74 were given NS numbers. SS 13 was renumbered to NS 705. Despite being given NS numbers, the first was withdrawn in 1922 and a few others served as cold reserves. An exception to the workloads named above were the machines that were stationed around peat farms in the North-East of the Netherlands. They remained active there until the withdrawal of the entire series because the tracks and bridges there were unable to handle heavier locomotives.

The last of the series to be active was NS 769, which was used for shunting at Crailoo in 1933.

NS 705, with the tender of SS 8, was withdrawn in 1932 and stored away for the railway museum. After WWII, she was restored to her Staatsspoorwegen livery. Various modifications NS made on the entire series were undone and 705 was put on display in 1953. She was originally painted in the same light green as SS 326, but this was corrected after some years.

Technical details

The SS 13 was originally equipped with: a handbrake on the 2-axle tender (the locomotive itself had no brake); a Giffard-injector; the injector was a pulling lever and the firebox was secured with a Salters-mechanism.

SS 13 was fitted with a roof in 1880, though without windows on the side. Instead, there were curtains.

When the series SS 5-8 was sold to a merchant in second-hand locomotives, their 3-axle tenders were swapped with the smaller 2-axle tenders of some locomotives, including SS 13. 13 received the tender of SS 8, which was restored after it exploded in 1868. This makes the tender the only preserved part of an exploded Dutch steam engine.

After the introduction of the Westinghouse-brake, the whole series was fitted with them.

They received couplings for steam heating at the back in the 1890s. Later, in 1905, also at the front.

Trivia

  • The SS 13, alongside SS 326, are the only steam engines in-game to feature cab interior and character animations for the driver.
    • Though they share having character animations with NS 1.
  • The SS 13 is the only mixed locomotive in the Preserved Four gamepass.
  • The SS 13 is only 10 tons weaker than the 4 cylinder express locomotive, the NS 3600.
  • It is worth noting that the livery that SS 13 is wearing isn't the livery it is painted in today. According to Robin, he opted to use the livery that the locomotive wore during the 1860s opposed to the faded livery it is wearing today as it hasn't been painted in quite a few decades.
  • SS 13 has been available since the release of the Preserved Four gamepass in version 0.5.
