The NS 1 was a German-built Dutch AA (Two axles, driven seperately) and later 1AA1 locomotor. It was the first locomotor NS would put into service.

Historical Details

Between 1913 and 1955 the Maschinen- und Armaturenfabrik vormals H. Breuer & Co. (or simply Breuer) produced seven types of small shunting engines. They started out with zero experience in this field and made a 10 horsepower machine in 1913. In 1924, the Type I followed with double the horse power. Their Type II had 28 horsepower and the type III, released in 1926, had 40.

In the early 1920s, the Nederlandsche Spoorwegen (NS) began looking into locomotors, little shunters that did not require a fully-trained and expensive driver to operate, to simplify and cut the costs of shunting around their smaller stations. The choice fell on the outdated type I from Breuer. Partially due to their own inexperience with motor-powered locomotives and partially because Breuer was well known for making good motors.

The Type I, being only the second type from an inexperienced builder, had various flaws. These are discussed in the technical details, but were so severe that NS decided to never order locomotives from motor-factories again, but provide their own designs to locomotive factories to build.

The reason why NS choose an outdated type instead of a better design specifically is unknown, though it is thought that the Chief Engineer wanted a cheap engine that could be experimented on without the possibility of expensive failures.

NS 1 entered serice on March 6, 1925. It was used at the station Naarden-Bussum until 1926, though with various breaks between work sessions. From 1926 to 1930, it worked at the workshop in Zwolle. In 1930 it was withdrawn.

Inspired by the design, a better version of the NS 1 was designed on paper in 1925, together with an automatic coupling in 1926. The NS 2 was never built, though the coupling was applied to the NS 100 series.

Technical details

NS 1 was originally fitted with a combustion engine that used petrol or benzene; axles driven by an expandable friction clutch, reverse gear transmission, 3 gears and chain transmission and that rested on rolling bearings; a handbrake and a horn for signalling.

NS 1 had a very small wheelbase compared to the wide frame (1900 mm), which resulted in the locomotor pulling itself upside down if it tried to pull a wagon which still had its brakes on. To prevent this from happening, a cast iron plate weighing 1,5 tonnes was added to the locomotor to weigh it down. This was not enough to combat the problem, so NS 1 was fitted with a pair of very small leading and trailing wheels.

However, because these small wheels would have to turn a lot more than the big wheels on the same distance, these were altered. If NS 1 was not pulling anything, the undriven wheels would be tilted off the track. If NS 1 did pull something, and develop the need to lift its front axles off the rails, the trailing wheels would be pushed against the track. This would keep the locomotor from flipping over, even though the leading wheels would be floating.

  • The NS 1 was added as purely a comedic high level shunter.
  • The NS 1 is the only engine from outside Streamlined's time period which can be bought with gulden.
  • Robin stated, "look, i know the streamlined community, they will not stop about NS 1 until its made", in response to why a model was made for the game.
  • When using the NS 1, the UI shows a button to toggle lights despite the fact that the NS 1 doesn't have any.
  • The NS 1 is the slowest and lowest capacity locomotive/locomotor in the game.
  • The NS 1 cannot be flipped and will always travel forward.
