Historical details

The SS & NS years

The Maatschappij tot Exploitatie van de Staatsspoorwegen (SS) really liked their series 621-626 (Later NS 8600), which were Hohenzollern's own design named 'Crefeld', so they placed a follow-up order for this type. Hohenzollern assumed that they meant the 'Krefeld' type, because the 'Crefeld' type was no longer in production. This new, slightly more modern design with a slightly different name caused so much confusion that Hohenzollern quickly renamed the 'Krefeld' type to 'Leverkusen'. They would build many of these for many railways and industries.

Both the Staatsspoorwegen and Nederlandsche Spoorwegen (NS) put the Crefelds and Leverkusens in the same series and stationed them across various depots for shunting work. After the fusion, NS numbered the Leverkusens NS 8607-8612.

After the war

SS 632, later NS 8612.

After WWII, the 8608 & 8611 were found in Germany, returned and repaired, but not for long. The machines were quick to lose its usefulness after the war. NS 8607-8610 were put out of service in 1947, but the Koninklijke Nederlandse Hoogovens en Staalfabrieken (KNHS, or simply 'Hoogovens') bought the 8608-8610 that same year, saving them from scrap. They went into service as the numbers 37-39.

NS 8611 did her last shunting at Eindhoven depot in 1950, when she was sold to the Hoogovens and started working there as nr. 42. The 8612 followed, also from Eindhoven, in 1952 and became nr. 43 at the Hoogovens.

At the Hoogovens, the series mostly did shunting, though the 42 and 43, were also used to shuttle trains between the different factories and the stop with NS. These shuttle trains were ceased after the opening of the Velser railway tunnel on the 28th of September, 1957. All five were withdrawn and scrapped between 1956-1959.

Technical details

The NS 8607-86012 were originally fitted with: a steam-powered brake; a steam-powered bell and two Gresham & Craven injectors.

The main dimensions of these locomotives were just about equal to those of the NS 8601-8606. They were about 2 tonnes heaver, slightly shorter and the boiler was 350 mm higher. The slide valves were placed right above the cylinders, under the same covering.

A part of the water storage was placed between the frame, underneath the boiler.

The locomotives received (automatic and independent) Westinghouse-brakes and air-powered sanders in 1932. The sanders only worked on the centre axle and the one behind it, depending on which way was driven.

The smallest curve radius these machines could handle was 70 metres.

Trivia

  • The NS 8600 is a high level steam shunter, able to move heavy loads around industries with ease,.
  • In version 0.4.44, there was a snowplough added to the NS 8600 during the winter season of 2021.
    • Strangely, the snowplough has not returned for any subsequent winter updates.
  • The NS 8600 was the first shunter to be added after the games launch.
  • Due to problems with the sounds effects, the addition of the NS 8600 to the game had to be delayed for a few weeks.
    • Before being added, it could be seen at Voorlem's turntable on display.
  • The NS 8600 was added in version 0.4.30.
