The NS 2000 was class of 5 Dutch 2'C1 (4-4-2) locomotives designed to pull mail trains. They were the only Dutch locomotives with this wheel arrangement.

Liveries

The only livery available for the NS 2000 Atlantic is Nederlandsche Spoorwegen green.

Historical details

The SS era

The Staatsspoorwegen faced increasingly heavy mail trains in the late 1890s. These required two of their 300 series to be pulled. The SS wanted to replace the doubleheader with a single locomotive, which had to be more powerful than the SS 800 (the later NS 1700). The 800s also served as a basis for the design. The locomotives were ordered at Beyer, Peacock & Co and put into service in 1900. In official documents, the SS numbered the locomotives in descending order (999-995). This was because the series would be expanded downwards if the need for that ever arose. SS 995-999 would be the biggest locomotives in the Netherlands until the arrival of the 2'C locomotives of the NBDS.

During the years that they pulled the mail trains between Boxtel and Vlissingen, they worked from Boxtel depot. Because they functioned poorly, the locomotives were moved to Vlissingen depot and, in the early 1920s, drove the mail trains up to Roosendaal, about halfway to Boxtel. A considerable amount of their time at Vlissingen was spent in the workshops, where they received many alterations to combat their rough riding.

SS 997, later NS 2003 somewhere between 1910-1920.

Besides being the only Dutch atlantics, only one other series of Dutch standard gauge tender locomotives had a trailing wheel. Egypt was the only other country that also built an Atlantic with inside cylinders and outside frames.

The NS era

Because of their tendencies to run roughly, they were moved to Eindhoven depot in 1926 and '27 to run the facultative coal trains between the South of Limburg and Utrecht. The 2000s were not suited for this task due to their low adhesion and large driving wheels.

NS 2002 and 2004 were withdrawn in 1930. The 2003 followed in 1931 and the 2001 and 2005 in 1932.

All but 2005 were scrapped, which was rebuilt into a resistance wagon instead, receiving the number NS 169002. Similar plans existed for NS 2001, but the costs turned out to be slightly higher than expected (ƒ10.868 instead of ƒ500). NS 169002 was used until 1952 and scrapped three years later.

Technical details

Standard technical details

The SS 995-999 were equipped with Westinghouse brakes, connections for steam heating on the front and back of the tender, air pumps from the New York Air Brake Company and were fitted with a Webb smokebox door, (the first Dutch locomotive to have one), and the first Dutch locomotive equipped with slide valves from the moment they were built.

The frame of the locomotive was similar to those of the SS 300 and 800, but the locomotive was much heavier. As to not exceed an axle load of 15 tons, a fifth axle was placed underneath the cab. The axle was connected with Cartazzi bearings which were capable of 38 mm of sideways movement to either side.

The boilers were originally fitted with Serve tubes. The 998 was given a new boiler with standard, smooth tubes and a superheater in 1912. The change resulted in a nearly 25% reduction in fuel consumption, so the 997 was given a boiler of the same design that year. The others got theirs in 1913.

In 1918 all locomotives received Knorr pre-heaters with a heating surface of 9,2 m² and a pump with a capacity of 120 litres a minute.

The original air pumps were replaced by standard ones in later years.

Modifications

The NS 2001-2005 did not run smoothly at all. When the line between Vlissengen and Boxtel was inspected after these locomotives pulled a mail train over it, it was discovered that the nails in the track were bent in an S-shape. Brand new ones commonly had to be replaced after only three days. Both the Staatsspoorwegen and Nederlandsche Spoorwegen tried to put an end to the poor riding of these engines.

This began in 1901 when the SS changed the bogie and coupling between locomotive and tender. Springs were added between the bogie wheels, which were strengthened in 1902. Later, the tender-coupling was revised entirely.

The boiler pressure was reduced from 12,4 atmosphere to 10,8 in 1914. Simultaneously, the maximum speed of the locomotives was dropped from 90 to 80 km/h. The coupled wheels were rebalanced and more weight was put on the rear axle. This reduced the adhesion, which resulted in wheel slip getting more common. Not just when starting to move, but also spontaneously when driving at high speeds. The SS moved the bogie of 995 forwards 20 cm, which also did not have any effect on how well the machine drove.

In 1922, NS set forth the efforts by giving the 2003 a three-axle tender from a NS 1700. A year later, they gave 2005 the bogie of a 3700, but this was reversed back due to no successful effect. The rear axle that was capable of side-to-side movement was removed and a 3,5 ton cast iron weight was placed behind the firebox in 1924. The boiler pressure was raised back to 12,4 atmosphere and little doors were added between the locomotives and their tenders. This added 100 mm between the tender and locomotive, which meant the buffers had to be adapted. None of these alterations made a difference.

Trivia

  • The NS 2000 was announced at 75R$ but was reduced down to 50R$ on release.
    • The Potvis and NS 2000 are priced as the same, yet the difference in performance is massive.
  • The NS 2000 available as a gamepass since they don't fit Streamlined's time period.
  • Despite being much more powerful in real life, the Atlantic has a higher capacity than the NS 4500, but is weaker than the approximately 40 year older SS 13.
  • The NS 2000 has been available since the release of their gamepass in version 0.3.5.
