The NS 3850 was a series of five 2'C (4-6-0) passenger locomotives of the German Baureihe 3810–40 series. They, along with various other German steam locomotives, left behind after the war and used by NS to make up for the severe lack of locomotives.

Historical Details

The P8 type

The first P8 were put into service under the Prussian state railways in 1907 and remained in production until 1930 in Germany. Somewhere between 3942 and 3962 have been build. Besides the German railways, some of these machines were also delivered to Poland, Lithuania and Romania. The latter of which kept building the P8s, under license, until 1939.

After first world war roughly 700 of these were given away as reparations to Poland, the Baltic states and various Allied countries: the Belgian railways got 168 and France received 172. The P8s that were left behind in Germany and build later received DRB numbers between 38 1001 and 38 4051 in 1925.

The demise of the P8s began in the 1960s, when the Belgian NMBS/SNCB began withdrawing their 64 series in 1966-1967. East and West Germany followed in 1972 and 1974 respectively. The Polish Railways withdrew their PKP Ok 1 fleet between 1979 - 1981, with Romania being a bit late to the party. Their CFR 280s were withdrawn throughout the 1980s.

About 17 members of the class have been preserved in various states across museums and heritage railways in Austria, Belgium, Germany and Romania.

NS 3851 - 3855

NS 3851 with the NS number on the cab. Hengelo,1946.

DRB 38 3733 & 38 3553 were found in 1944 in the liberated, southern part of the Netherlands and were put into service given the lack of alternative options. Due to their similarities with the NS 3700 (which also takes the first 20 slots of the 3800s) and the fact the 3900 numbers were already taken, they were given the serial number 3850 and became NS 3851 & NS 3852. The other three locomotives were added to NS' collection of rolling stock in May of 1945, though these operated from Hengelo depot.

After their return to Germany in 1947, all five ex-NS P8's served for quite a few more years.

Noteworthy is that NS 3851 had driven, by far, the most kilometers out of any borrowed German locomotives with about 50.000 km under NS, of which 44.800 km in December of '45 and January of '46. After that, it only got 2.000 or 3.000 kilometers a month.

Technical details

P8 details

The P8's design was changed on various points through-out time, which resulted in large diversity within the class. However, the main dimensions of the boiler were equal to those of the Prussian G10s (some of which served as the NS 4800). Post-1925, the DRB fitted a large number of locomotives with wind deflectors and electrical lighting.

The P8s were equipped with a coupling for steam heating on both the front and back. Brake-wise, they had both an automatic and manual airbrake A few had an air or steam powered bell. A majority had a Knorr pre-heater with a heater capable of heating 13,6 m² and pump with a capacity of 250 litres a minute, though some P8s had this pre-heating installation removed during WWII in place of a second injector, as the pre-heater was sensitive to frost. This resulted in malfunctions during the cold winters in eastern Europe. Additionally, the required reserve parts were becoming scarce.

NS 3850 details

The entire series was equipped with smoke deflectors and electrical lighting, however the turbo generators of 3851 and 3853 were removed in 1946, likely after malfunctions.

The 3852-3854 had Deuta-speedometers. It is not known what type the 3851 and '55 had.

NS 3853 had a so-called "Langlauftender" as opposed to the standard tender the others had. This tender had a water capacity of 31,5 m³ and a service weight of 63,5 tons. It increased the buffer to buffer length of the locomotive to 19,95 meters.

Trivia

  • The NS 3850 is mid to high level locomotive, with an above average 1st and 2nd class capacity and a good top speed for a passenger locomotives.
  • It is the second 'borrowed' German locomotive to be added to the game.
  • NS 3853 had a "Langlauftender", though the in-game model uses the same tender as the other locomotives.
  • In version 0.7.1, the NS 3850 became the first locomotive to have fully modelled Walschaerts valve gear.
    • In version 0.8.5, it was among the first, again, to receive the newer and slightly simpler Blender version of Walschaerts valve gear.
  • In version 0.5.17 the price was increased by ƒ10.000 and the unlock level was increased by 2.
  • In version 0.7.6, there was a snow plow added to the during the winter season of 2023.
  • The NS 3850 was added in version 0.5.9.
