Historical details
The GTUW coal wagon was designed in 1938 by Werkspoor in a collaboration with NS for the transportation of rubble stone. It was constructed out of steel and had four doors on each side, as opposed to the older wooden wagons with only two, which in return greatly shortened the unloading time. Due to their higher walls, these steel wagons could also hold 20 tonnes more than the old wooden wagons.
Over 5000 wagons would be produced with various design differences (such as the GTU, GTUK, GTM, GTO & GTOW). Out of the 5000, only 750 would end up getting the GTUW designation. These would be numbered NS 63701-64450.

The sole survivor of the type, NS 65248, was delivered to the Spoorwegmuseum (Dutch Railway Museum) in 1989.
