Overview

Voorlem is a large city in the rough center of map. Its main station is Voorlem, smaller stations inside the city include Beurs, 's Heerenwijk and Voorlem Oost. The city is based on Rotterdam and Haarlem.

Due to the size of the city, it is divided into multiple parts:

  • Voorlem
  • Voorlem Oost
  • Voorlem Beurs (or simply Beurs)
  • Oostereiland

The city appears to be unfinished due to many empty spots around Voorlem Oost.

Industries

J.J. Beynes Koninklijke Fabriek van Rijtuigen en Spoorwagens

J.J. Beynes Royal Factory of carriages and Railway Cars is a large factory sitting just outside the main entrance of Voorlem station. The name indicates they produce passenger coaches and freight wagons.

Description

History

Voorlem is a city with compact tenement buildings, stylized after 17th 18th and 19th century dutch architecture, with newer styles of apartment buildings on the edges of the city. These newer styles can be seen at Voorlem Oost. The centre of the city around the church has a medieval street pattern, which suggests the city was probably founded somewhere in the late medieval period. There are several construction sites across the city, showing that there has been no slowdown in growth. However, the city has also suffered. Modern buildings between old houses suggest that the city has been bombed, which is seen both near Voorlem Station and Beurs. Other remnants of the war are three bunkers at the shoreline near Voorlem Oost.

Oostereiland
Oostereiland

The city is split up by a large river, with Oostereiland in the middle. Several bridges have been build to traverse from one end of Voorlem to the other. The first bridge, consisting of metal archways supported by brick pillars, connects Voorlem and Voorlem Oost with Oostereilandand, where it turns into a pylon-supported elevated track way. The second bridge connects Oostereiland to Beurs with similar metal archways. However, these are resting on stone pillars and have a raisable part to allow ships through. Shortly after, the bridge goes to Beurs Station (hofbogen) by a stone and brick archway (luchtspoor).

Beurs and Oostereiland are also connected by road bridge.

's Heerenwijk

's Heerenwijk is a neighbourhood in Voorlem Beurs with its own station. It has a shunting yard and a small harbour. It also contains the spawn location for players and a statue with all of Streamlined's developers and contributors. Next to the statue is a small radio which plays the current Streamlined Theme Song.

Landmarks

Landmarks are spread across the city, and there is always something new to find when wondering the streets of Voorlem. Four Windmills can be seen near the waters edge, which were used for different crafts. There are two churches, a smaller one near Beurs, and a large church a few blocks away from Voorlem station. In a square that contains Voorlem Church, stands the statue of King Willem the First of the Netherlands. He has a cone on his head, which is a slight nod to both the cone on the head of the Duke of Wellington in Glasgow, and a nod to BuilderAtWork.

Trivia

  • A model of the NS 8600 was displayed at Voorlem's turntable for a while
    • This was due to the fact that no proper sounds had been found in-time, so it was placed there to tease players.
  • Voorlem used to have a copy of the Amsterdamse Poort, Haarlem (Wikipedia link), but it was removed in a rebuild.
  • J.J. Beynes used to have an Oval-Windower sitting on the track below.
