Description

General

Rossum is an old city which started out as a town next to a lake. It stands in a polder which is kept dry by the Vier Noorder Koggen steam pumping station. On the west side of the city lies a raised canal which reaches all the way to Voorlem with a canal lock on either side. Various bridges allow both road- and railways to cross over it.

History

Rossum started out as a lake-side town and earned its city rights in the medieval era. It formed an important trade center as it laid further inland than the other coastal cities, which could form a defensive barrier. Just like Dokmuiden and Zand op 't Zee, it got a lighthouse which allowed for a primitive form of triangulation along the coast. Much work was put into creating a higher canal which allowed them to flood the surrounding lands in case of an invasion, which still remains to this day. However, this raised canal caused quite some trouble as the water could break out after rainstorms. Various techniques were tried to combat the following floods throughout the ages but it wasn't until a steam pumping station was build in 1869 that the floods could be handled efficiently.

It gained a railway connections in the 1880s. A small passenger station was constructed in 1883 since a line was planned from Voorlem to Zand op 't Zee. Two years later the harbour connected to the rail network to more swiftly transport the incoming and outgoing goods. These connections resulted in jobs and transport a-plenty which steadily increased Rossum's population over the years which led to a housing crisis in the late 1920s. The old city lay-out left very little room for extra homes so new houses were build on the other side of the canal.

Trivia

  • Rossum is one of three locations with a light house.
  • The Hof de Vriendschap courtyard is also used in Hazeldrecht.
  • In version 0.5.25, Rossum received a huge overhaul that completely changed the houses, harbour, light house and removed the city wall.
