Real life

To prepare for the upcoming threat of Nazi Germany, the Dutch began mobilising in 1939-1940. A part of this mobilisation was the building of over 500 concrete structures called groepsschuilplaats type P (Group shelter location type P). These structures were meant to protect groups of 10 to 13 infantry personnel against an artillery bombardment. As such, they lacked any offensive amenities like built-in machine guns or places to set-up cannons or other large weaponry. The bunkers were mainly constructed on flat, open terrain that offered no protective of camouflaging structures.

The bunkers were built with one angled side and one non-angled side for entry and were roughly 8,2 metres long, 6,5 metres wide and 4,85 metres tall. Conform to regulations produced by the Royal Military Academy in 1928-1936, the outer walls were 1,5 metres wide, with the non-angled wall having an additional 30 centimetres of protection. The inner walls were only 0,8 metres wide, the bottom plate was slightly stronger with a width of 0,9 metres. The roof was the widest parth of a structure with width of 2,15 metres.

Circa 570 were built, with some unfinished due to the Dutch capitulation in 1940, though a majority of these are still around today. Of the survivors, most have had their entrances bricked up and thus cannot be entered, though a few, belonging to museums, can be entered. One particular bunker near the Diefdijk, near the A2 road, has been cut in half to display how thick the walls truly are.
