Historical detail
The S-CHR vans were built after 1951 after Dutch Railways and clients required their trains to be transported at higher speeds. Most wagons also received better floors to be able to handle the weights of the now common forklifts. This wasn't sufficient and a lot of these wagons got modified with extra steel braces. The majority of the wagons in the series were assigned to general cargo duties, and received yellow stripes or triangles on the wagons. This gave them the nickname 'Geelbanders', or 'Yellow stripers'. In the 1970s the need for general cargo trains reduced drastically, and the few trains required were ran using the Gs wagons. A relatively large amount of these wagons can be found at railway museums around the Netherlands, with for example NS 34099 at the Museumspoorlijn STAR and NS 33843 at the Veluwsche Stoomtrein Maatschappij.
After World War 2 there was a shortage of guard vans for goods trains, so a couple S-CHR goods vans were converted to temporary guard vans with a few basic necessities inside, like a seat, table and a coal fired heater.
Trivia
