Zand op 't Zee is the only passenger station and main freight depot of Zand op 't Zee. It is currently the main terminus station for the game and one of two stations to feature a turntable.

Station Layout

Main Building

The main building is asymmetrical in design, shape and form, consisting of a two-story main building, a small pavillion at the head of the platforms and a low connecting wing in between. The roof has multiple levels and section, incorpororating steep, sloping gables, as well as dormer windows which punctuate the roof.

Goods Shed

The goods shed is simple, yet effective. It has a rectangular shape, with a gabled roof which features an extended canopy to provide shelter for the open platform area, and is being held by small supports which connect to the build. A platform is also present, serving as an easy access point to load and offload any goods from arriving or departing trains.

Track

In terms of the station and its track layout, five lanes of tracks which terminate at the station, albeit only three of said said tracks that occupy the platforms which are for passenger use, whilst the remaining two are exclusively for goods traffic.

Additionally, a sixth stretch of track which extends into the city and to the docks is present. It's primarily used for goods and other services, specifically trains hauling construction materials, chemicals and wood.

Historical Basis

View of the platforms at Enkhuizen Station.

The station building of Enkhuizen was built in 1885 and opened on June 5. the same year. The station was designed by architecht Marius Antoine van Wadenoijen (Feb. 22. 1850 - Nov. 14. 1922), and like Zand is also a terminus station and is the oldest surviving example of six station buildings of similar design. Wadenoijen also designed the stations at Kesteren and Geldermalsen. It is likely he also designed the other stations on the Zaandam - Enkhuizen line, which of course terminated at Enkhuizen.

A ferry service which connected Enkhuizen to Stavoren was an essential link in the direct rail connection between Amsterdam and Leeuwarden, however the connection became less important after the merging of Hollandsche IJzeren Spoorweg-Maatschappij (HSM) and Maatschappij tot Exploitatie van Staatsspoorwegen (SS) into NS in 1917.

The station building still stands to this day, and since the 1970s, has been in cooperation with the Hoorn-Medemblik Steam Tram Museum, offering a tourist boat connection to Medemblik, which has been departing from the mooring next to the station. Since 2002, the MS Friesland, which is an old ferry owned by Rederij Doeksen, has since maintained this connection.

Trivia

  • Zand op 't Zee in English means Sand on the Sea. This is pointing to the fact that the station is located next to the Sea.
  • This is one of the busier stations as its the only location new players can spawn passenger trains at.
  • The station is based on the station of Enkhuizen.
    • The docks next to Zand op 't Zee are also there in Enkhuizen. Back in the day you could catch a ferry to Stavoren. Nowadays it's part of the 'Historical Triangle', where you can take the ferry to Medemblik, and then travel by steam-tram to Hoorn.
    • The goods shed is there to this day and is part of a carpark.
  • The paintings in the station hallway depict 'Volendamse' fishermen and the ferry 'R. Van Hasselt'.
