Zand op 't Zee, Westdijk, Voorlerberg

Rossum is an island station in Rossum situated between Zand op 't Zee and Westdijk. It has two platforms with a passing track on either side.

Station Layout

Main Building and Platform

The overall station is comprised of platform station buildings, with a decent amount of distance between them. A large platform roof spans across most of the length of the platform, and is supported by both the station buildings themselves, including the pillars or support struts keeping them in place. A pedestrian underpass is present and accessible via stairs in the center of the station platform, for passengers to make their way on and off the station platform.

Track

Four lanes of track are present at Rossum, two passing lanes on either side to allow non-stopping services to pass by without any fuss, as well as the two lanes which occupy the platforms. The tracks themselves lie on an embankment, with a small viaduct beneath the line to make passing through to the docks much easier.

Historical Basis

The platforms seen at Weert.

Rossum is based on two different stations in the Netherlands. The station platform in Weert, as well as the platform in Geldrop. The original Weert railway station was built on July 20. 1879, however the current building which stands today, was built in 1914 to the design of the architect George Wilhelm van Heukelom, being made of bricks with an octagonal tower with a spire bearing the city's coat of arms. The station resides on the Eindhoven - Roermond - Maastricht route.

Geldrop station, which had also been designed by George Wilhelm van Heukelom, was opened November 1, 1913. The terrain which ran through Geldrop was swampy, as such the station was built on a dike. The original station building was unfortunately demolished in 1974 to make room for a pedestrian and bicycle tunnel, and thus ticket sales were instead moved to the station platform building. The station sits on the line which runs from Eindhoven - Weert.

Trivia

  • The station is based on stations from Weert, Geldrop and Robin's inspiration.
  • In version 0.5.25 the station received a complete overhaul.
    • Prior to that version it had a large station building and only 3 tracks.
