Historical Basis

Rock salt was originally found in the area of Boekelo in 1911, with the significance of domestic salt extraction quickly being realised by the government. Of which the signal was given to undergo the extraction of the White Gold in Twente. The first salt would emerge in Boekelo, following the founding of the Royal Dutch Salt Industry (KNZ) in 1919.
With the large growth of the KNZ, a large salt chemical factory would be opened right next to the current salt industry, with the factory receiving its own rail connection. With NS regularly collecting and delivering goods wagons of salt and chemicals. The factory would however close in 1957, following the KNZ's decision to move its headquarters to Hengelo and ripping up the rail connection. The Second World War brought on further decline.
However, the halt which previously transported workers to work at the factory still stands to this day and is owned by the "Museum-Buurtspoorweg", with heritage trains running up and down the line.
