Selecting a locomotive

When you click the locomotive button in the left upper corner, it will bring you to the Consist Creator.
File:SelectionMenu.png

Above the list of trains, you will be able to select one of three categories (Steam, Diesel and DMU). A list of locomotives in each category will be at the bottom of the screen. Each locomotive has a picture, its name, weight and cargo category. Those categories are: Passenger, Freight, Mixed or Shunter. Unlocked locomotives will be organized in that order and from low to high weight within each job category.

After the unlocked locomotives there will be unbought gamepass locomotives, which are followed by locomotives you have yet to purchase, listed in order of unlock level.

Owners of the Double Header gamepass can additionally press a button in the lower left corner to select a second locomotive, if applicable. Only suitable locomotives will appear, sothere is no need to remember all combinations. Some steam-diesel combinations are possible, in which case the category selection at the top will remain. For DMUs, players can select 2 instead of 3 non-gamepass units.

Owners of gamepasses which include special liveries for rolling stock which also has a livery purchasable with gulden (currently only the War Department and Preserved Four passes) will see those locomotives between the unlocked locomotives. You can use the gamepass livery but must still buy the NS livery with gulden.

Creating a consist

Once suitable locomotives have been selected, you can click on the big green to select wagons. If you choose a DMU, you can try adding a second and move on. Depending on what job your locomotive can do, different cargo types will be available. Only one cargo type can be selected, however an additional wagon from the special category may be added for a boost.

File:ConsistCreatorTutorial.png

When choosing what wagons or coaches to take, you cannot surpass the length limit, weight capacity (different per engine) or passenger class limit (different per engine, passenger only).

If your wagon does not spawn upon clicking it in the bottom row, select one of the liveries below the information section on the right.

Selecting a route

Once you are finished with the consist, you can select a route. Which routes are available vary depending on what cargo type you have chosen. You will first select a starting station, then a list of possible end stations will appear. Once an end station has been selected, the game will show you the exact route you will be doing. You can then press the big green button one last time to spawn.

Driving a train

Driving a train

Once you're spawned in with your brand-new consist, various new UI elements appear on the screen and the controls change. Now you will have to drive to various places to load and unload freight or passengers.

Controls

  • 'W' to increase throttle, 'S' to decrease it.
  • 'D' to increase braking, 'A' to decrease it.
  • 'T' to load/unload passengers and cargo.
  • 'X' to delete your train.
  • Spacebar the whistle (Steam engines) or the low horn (Diesels)
  • 'B' to toggle the bell (Steam engines) or the high horn (Diesels)
  • 'L' or the Lights button to toggle lights.
  • 'C' to toggle cylinders (Steam only)

These can also be triggered with the buttons and sliders on the screen. The keybinds can be changed in the settings.

UI

When driving a train, a new button appears on the top left with an X. This button can be used to delete your train. In the bottom right you see all controls related to driving a train, with a speedometer in the middle and your throttle and brake on the left and right side.

The four circles on the left are camera controls; explained in the Camera Controls section a bit down.

The four circles on the right are, top to bottom:

  • Lights
  • Whistle/low horn
  • Bell/high horn
  • Cylinders

Stopping at the correct locations

The game will show 3 different colours of markers at stations you have to stop at: red, green and yellow.
File:Markers.png
Information on markers from the short tutorial
Red means it's a place where you have to load/unload freight or passengers, yellow means you have to turn around and green means it's the final stop.

It is important to ALWAYS stop at the first red stop on short routes, as the game requires at least 2 stops to give you money. However, it's suggested to stop at all stops to earn the most amount of rewards.

The Map

The Map

To help you figure out where you are, are able to open a map at any time with M.

The map can be opened both inside and outside of trains and will display a few things:
File:PlayersOnMap.png
The colour difference between your own train and someone else's
  • The railway tracks
  • Stopping points as white circles
  • Your route
  • Station names
  • Signals as red, green or yellow (depending on their state)
  • Your own train as light blue blocks
  • Other trains as dark blue blocks

Using the map

The actual map part of this menu can be zoomed and dragged around as the entire map doesn't fit on screen. It also has a Magnifying Glass button. Pressing this will zoom in all the way and track your position. Zooming in or out will not stop the tracking, but dragging around will. Pressing on station names will move the map to that station.

If you are not driving a train, pressing on the station names will instead teleport you to that station, unless you are sitting on a bench or in a coach. Pressing the magnifying glass will have the map track your character.

Camera Controls

Camera Controls

The camera in streamlined has various modes to view the game from different angles or simply get better screenshots.

Icon Keybind Effect
File:CameraIcon1.png 1 Camera focuses on the next object in your train; will loop around if the last wagon has been reached.
File:CameraIcon2.png 2 The camera will stay in the same position and keep looking at the locomotive.
File:CameraIcon3.png 3 Will provide a driver's view
File:CameraIcon4.png 4 Will move the camera to the right of groups of wheels starting at the front of the engine, ending at the end of the train.
None Q Decrease Field Of View / Zoom in
None E Increase FOV / Zoom out
None R Reset FOV

The first 4 can be accessed when driving a train or when sitting in someone else's. The last 3 can be used at any time, including during the consist creator.

Settings

Settings

The settings tab has three parts: Gameplay, Graphics and Keybinds.

Gameplay

The gameplay tab features the ability to alter the volumes in the consist creator and the sounds played in the settings & consist creator, below that you can disable the route pointers.

You can also affect the reversing and flipping of trains at the 'Engine reversing' section. This has the following effects:

  • Yes - The engine will always have a different end facing the train after reversing; if you were driving with your tender towards the train, your tender will face away from the train afterwards.
  • No - The engine will always have the same end facing towards the train; having your tender face towards the train means it will always face towards it.
  • Ask Each Time - You will select Yes or No each time you reverse at a yellow stop.

Graphics

Currently, you can only toggle the shadows between Off and High.

Keybinds

This page allows you to view and change all of Streamlined's keybinds.

Advanced Tutorials

Advanced Consist Creator

Advanced Consist Creator Guide

This section will talk about everything which you can do in the consist creator.

Categories

All locomotives are categorised in one of 3 groups: Steam, diesel and DMUs (Diesel Multiple Units). But what is the difference between these categories? The steam category offers the largest amount of engines for you to use and has engines made for all four job types. The diesel category has quite some engines which are usually stronger than steam engines, but they have no passenger locomotives. Most diesels make up for this by being mixed. Lastely, the DMUs can only be used for passenger trains will immediately take you to the section where you normally select wagons and coaches. This is because DMUs are both the engine and coach at once.

Steam & Diesel

When using a steam or diesel locomotive, it's important to choose the engine with the highest capacity if you want more rewards. How many tons of freight or how many passengers you put on the train play a large role in earning gulden, as can be seen on the Currency page. To find out the best consist for the cargo type you want to use do the following:

Passenger
  • Select your best Special category to earn the most rewards.
  • Fill out your 1st class limit with the highest capacity first class wagon you own.
  • Repeat for 2nd class.
  • Repeat for 3rd class.
Freight
  • Select your best Special category to earn the most rewards.
  • Fill out all remaining slots with one type of wagon and find out which one gives you the most tons of cargo.
  • If there are higher capacity wagons, replace the best ones one by one until you can't anymore.
  • You should now have either 1 type or 2 types of wagon in your optimized consist.

DMUs

Diesel Multiple Units are much easier to optimise. DMUs with a later unlock level will hold more passengers and are therefore better than ones unlocked earlier. All DMUs except the TEEs can have a second engine of that type behind them. This allows you to double the amount of passengers you transport and allows you to create all sorts of livery combinations with the DE-1 and DE-2.

The buttons at the bottom

The buttons at the bottom of the screen, in the middle, allow you to go to any wagon of your consist. There, you can delete that wagon (unless it's the locomotive), add wagons/coaches behind it (if the limits allow it) or flip it, which will also make the fourth camera mode point in the opposite way on this part of the train.
