Historical details

The LWL stake wagon is a variant of the LW family of stake wagons. The LWL stake wagons were built in various configurations starting 1901, they were ordered by many of the 1900s railway companies, like the Staatsspoorwegen [SS], Hollandsche IJzeren Spoorweg-Maatschappij [HSM] and Nederlandsche Centraal-Spoorweg-Maatschappij [NCSM]. The Dutch Railways [NS] themselves also ordered more wagons after the merge. All wagons were slightly different in length and design, and therefor there was a large variation of designations, like LW, LWGK, LWR, LWRK and LWRW. After 1950 they were slowly being withdrawn, in favour of the new steel stake wagons. Starting 1978 they were transferred to the maintenance fleet, where they could be used to transport all sorts of rail materials. In the 1980s they were all decommissioned.

This particular wagon has its stakes removed to allow for easier access to the cargo. They weren't needed to hold it in place for this type of cargo.

Several examples of the LW family have been preserved, like NS 87583 LWGK and NS 87915 LWR in the Spoorwegmuseum in Utrecht.
