Historical details
The U type silo wagons were ordered by Dutch Railways at the end of the 1950s, designed to carry powders like calcium & sodium carbonate. The spheres were built by Interconsult, a Swedish company, while the undercarriages were built by the Dutch Werkspoor. There were 3 different wagons in 3 different sizes, the U, Ucs and Ubcs. Due to their interesting design, they were quickly known by their nickname 'Bollenwagen', or 'Ball wagon' translated.
The Ucs in particular had 2 spheres with a capacity of 17 cubic meters. After being the last one used in service, NS 99625 was acquired by Spoorwegmuseum in the late 1990s and can currently be viewed on the Spoorwegmuseum grounds.
