Historical details
The design
The X 2770 were designed by France as a part of the large cooperative network of international trains in Europe that was created in 1957 to compete with the increasingly popular airplane. DB (Germany), CFL (Luxembourg), FS (Italy), NMBS (Belgium), NS (The Netherlands), SBB (Switzerland) and later RENFE (Spain) were also a part of the network.
The SNCF designed these three part trainsets but based them on the RGP 2 X 2700 and X 2800, which had entered service some years earlier. The decision to use existing technology allowed the trainsets to be finished so fast that France could present their TEE trainsets in 1956.
TEE services
The trainsets, with the numbers X 2771 - X 2781, got three TEE routes to exploit when the TEE network was launched on June, 1957.
TEE number/name | Route |
---|---|
13 & 14 'Mont Cenis' | Lyon - Milan, Milan - Lyon |
64 & 66 'Arbalète' | Paris East - Zurich, Zurich - Paris East |
81 & 86 'lle de France' | Paris North - Amsterdam, Amsterdam - Paris North |
Note: the numbers are from 1971,after train routes got European numbers. |

In October of the same year, they also got the TEE route 32 & 33 'Parsival', which travelled between Paris North and Hamburg. In 1960, they lost 'Parsival' route in favour of the TEE route 40 & 41 'Paris-Ruhr', which travelled the same route as 'Parsival' but stopped at Dortmund. The German VT 11.5 trainsets took over the 'Parsival' routes. In 1960 also, they lost the 'Mont Cenis' route to Italian TEE trainsets.
Around this time, they stop being used in three-car setups, with the standard two-car alone or double heading becoming the new standard.
Four years later, they lost the 'Ile de France' when that route was given to electric locomotives. The RAm TEE, which were also used on that route, took over the exploitation of the 'Arbalète' route, so that the X 2770s only had the 'Paris-Ruhr' to exploit. This lasted roughly a year, as the VT 11.5 would take over this route in 1965.

SNCF services
After the TEE services, the SNCF used them from Geneva as express trains to Paris, Portbou and Marseille. They kept their TEE livery, though lost the TEE logo. In 1969, two TEE services took over the trains to Portbou and Marseille. After this, the X 2770s were used for so-called local train services until the mid 80s, for which they got a different, yellow livery that was similar to the French 'Turbotrain' livery.
The X2770s lasted until 2006 and none have been preserved.
Technical details
The SCNF X 2770s had a powered car with a 12-cylinder 825 horsepower diesel engine that could produce 607 kW at 1500 RPM, with which they could reach speeds upwards of 160 km/h, though this was limited to 140 in TEE services.
The second car of the X 2770 was a control car, which was less streamlined than the power car. This This meant they had no dining car, so food was served to the seats, similar to air planes.
The trainsets would also be coupled up with the control cars pointing to each other to create a four-car DMU. For the TEE services, some would be given only an extra powered car, creating the three-car version that is seen in Streamlined. This practise would be abandoned in the late 1950s/early 1960s, after which they were only used on their own or as double headers.
Between 1985-1991, they received an overhaul which modernised the cab by reinforcing the exterior and replacing the interior with a Z2 type cab.
Trivia
- Prior to Version 0.3.7 the RPG x2770 had two liveries, SNCF Yellow and TEE Red.
- This was removed, as the SNCF Livery wasn't used in the time period Streamlined is set in.
- Prior to Version 0.3.7 the RPG x2770 had 4 units, but was reduced to 3 as the TEE version only used 3 units during its running time.
- The RGP TEE is currently the only French train in-game.
- The destination boards in the spawn menu reads Voorlem and Dokmuiden Airport, which is a route not possible currently.
- In version 0.5.32 the TEE logo was removed and replaced with a similar styled logo after a 2 year contract expired.
- The RGP x2770 has been available since the TEE gamepass' release in version 0.2.1.
