Historical Detail

SS
Between 1901-1903 the Maatschappij tot Exploitatie van de Staatsspoorwegen (SS) ordered 110 coaches of the C8c type from Beijnes, Werkspoor and Dyle & Bacalan as a direct continuation of a previously ordered batch of coaches. The 110 new coaches came into service as third class (C) coaches SS C 651-760. The coach is divided into two sections, each with 4 compartments. Both sides had one toilet in the middle of the coach, making walking from one side to the other impossible. Both sides had a seperate compartment for women.
NS
After the SS and Hollandsche IJzeren Spoorweg-maatschappij (HSM) merged in 1921, the coaches were renumbered to NS C 4551-4660, remaining third class coaches. Withdrawal began before World War 2, but some coaches survived into the 1950s. Coach C 4623 was preserved and would be repainted repainted in 1973, in its original SS teak livery and numbered back to SS C 723, it currently resides in the Dutch Railway Museum in Utrecht.
